Interesting article on Harvard Business Review’s blog: Does Standard & Poor’s Deserve a Downgrade?

http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2011/08/does_standard_poors_deserve_a.html?cm_sp=most_widget-_-default-_-Does%20Standard%20%26%20Poor’s%20Deserve%20a%20Downgrade%3F

about 2/3 down the page you’ll come to :

We must separate the risk of politicians acting childishly (extremely high) from the risk of the United States actually defaulting on its debt (extremely low).

Ironically, the political gridlock that caused the downgrade may actually help to reduce our debt. David Leonhardt remarked in the New York Times that if Congress remains deadlocked and cannot agree on a new tax policy, then the Bush tax cuts will automatically expire across all tax brackets on January 1, 2013. According to Bloomberg, this “amounts to a $3.6 trillion tax increase over 10 years,” roughly four times more than the debt deal negotiated between Democrats and Republicans. In other words, the political gridlock that Standard & Poor’s considers a major factor in our downgrade might be a major factor in righting our ship.

on the 66th Anniversary of the Bombing of Hiroshima

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/08/05/1003546/-On-the-Sixty-Sixth-Anniversary-of-the-Bombing-of-Hiroshima?via=siderecent

Although many others could be cited, here, finally, is the statement of another conservative, a man who was a close friend of President Truman’s, his Chief of Staff (as well as President Roosevelt’s Chief of Staff), and the five star Admiral who presided over meetings of the Combined U.S.-U.K. Chiefs of Staff during the war—William D. Leahy: “[T]he use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender. . . . [I]n being the first to use it, we . . . adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages.  I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children.”

‘destroying women & children’ vs. today’s ‘collateral damage’  . .  . how our lives have changed . . .

Proof that Citizens United undermines the democratic process: hedge funds & private equity firms are more vocally represented than voting citizens

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/in-cantor-hedge-funds-and-private-equity-firms-have-voice-at-debt-ceiling-negotiations/2011/07/22/gIQAZYNVYI_story.html

As the debt ceiling talks tick down to the Aug. 2 deadline, leading the opposition to any deal that includes higher taxes is the new tribune of rank and file House Republicans: Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia.

. . .

Cantor’s pivotal role marks a rapid rise to power for the 48-year-old from the Richmond suburbs. It also represents a major coup for sectors of the investment community that Cantor has been striving to assist for several years — on the same tax issues that have been at stake this month. And so far, Cantor has prevailed on those issues.

when I signed the Stop Anti-Gay Bullying in Anoka-Hennepin, MN on change.org I didn’t realize it referred to Michele Bachmann’s district

“Throughout all of this, Bachmann has remained uncharacteristically quiet. Her office did not respond to a request for comment. But she is on the record opposing anti-bullying legislation. In 2006, Bachmann attended a hearing on an anti-bullying bill in the state legislature and voiced her opinion that bullying was simply a fact of life.

She told state lawmakers: “I think for all us our experience in public schools is there have always been bullies, always have been, always will be. I just don’t know how we’re ever going to get to point of zero tolerance and what does it mean?…What will be our definition of bullying? Will it get to the point where we are completely stifling free speech and expression? Will it mean that what form of behavior will there be—will we be expecting boys to be girls?”

. . .

The anti-gay climate in the schools in Bachmann’s district has been so extreme that it has attracted the attention of the Justice Department and the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, which are both investigating allegations of anti-gay bullying. The Southern Poverty Law Center has also been on the ground investigating discrimination against gay students. On Thursday, it sued the school district over its “neutrality” policy, which the group views as a potential violation of the equal protection clause of the Constitution.

In a letter to the district superintendent in May, SPLC wrote: The gag policy bears no rational relationship to any legitimate governmental purpose. On the contrary, the history surrounding the policy’s enactment clearly shows that the policy was adopted solely in deference to some community members’ disapproval of, and animus toward, a particular class of citizens—LGBT people. The law is clear that mere animus toward an unpopular group cannot constitute a legitimate governmental purpose.”

A rebellion is always legal in the first person, such as “our rebellion.” It is only in the third person – “their rebellion” – that it becomes illegal.
