Donors Gave as Santorum Won Earmarks

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/16/us/politics/as-rick-santorum-secured-earmarks-2006-donations-flowed-in.html?_r=1&ref=politics

But an examination of Mr. Santorum’s earmark record sheds light on another aspect of his political personality, one that is at odds with the reformer image he has tried to convey on the trail: his prowess as a Washington insider.

A review of some of his earmarks, viewed alongside his political donations, suggests that the river of federal money Mr. Santorum helped direct to Pennsylvania paid off handsomely in the form of campaign cash.

Earmarks, long a hallmark of a pay-to-play culture in Washington, have become largely taboo among lawmakers of both parties. But that element of Mr. Santorum’s record has mostly gone unexplored, in part because transparency rules governing earmarks did not go into effect until after he left office.

GBV Dems host Jim McGovern in Sutton

Jim McGovern addresses the GBV Dems and their guests

Earlier this evening, the Greater Blackstone Valley Dems got together to host Congressman Jim McGovern for a meet-n-greet in Sutton.  We had a great crowd, and we all got to hear the Congressman speak about the issues of the day, the climate in Washington, and the upcoming elections later this year.

Also in attendance were state senators Richard Moore and Michael Moore, as well as several candidates for state rep, including Don Bourque and Bob Dubois.  Jennifer  Callahan was there as well, but she was keeping her plans for the upcoming contests to herself at this point, saying that there’s still plenty of time to decide what she’s going to do this year.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting year – don’t miss out, join the Greater Blackstone Valley Dems and help us turn the valley blue!

Candidate Don Bourque with MA Democratic State Committee Chair John Walsh and his wife Donna

We are excited to report that Democrat Don Bourque of Webster has announced that he is running for the State Representative seat in the 18th Worcester District. The newly redistricted seat includes our towns of Douglas, precincts in Oxford, and all of Sutton and Webster.

Surrounded by friends, all of his colleagues on the Webster Board of Selectmen and State Senator Michael Moore (D-Millbury), Bourque said he is running to bring better representation to all the people in the district. State Committee Chairman John Walsh and his wife Donna also came and John impressed upon the crowd how important it is that they get out and work for Don and all the Democrats on the ballot in the coming year.

Read more in the Patriot newspaper. Good luck to you, Don, and we look forward to following your race!

Kate’s Holiday Party

The Greater Blackstone Valley Dems were well represented at Kate Donaghue’s Holiday Party this afternoon, with myself, Lisa Mosczynski, Jay Gilchrist, Kim Hall, and Brett and Jeanette Belanger in attendance.  We had a chance to talk with Elizabeth Warren:

In addition to Professor Warren, several other Democratic candidates for Senate were present: I saw Marisa DeFranco and Herb Robinson, and I believe Tom Conroy was there as well. Other political luminaries were everywhere – Congressman Jim McGovern, Lt. Governor Tim Murray, Treasurer Steve Grossman, Attorney General Martha Coakley, Secretary of State Bill Galvin and many more were in attendance. I had a chance to have an talk with AG Coakley, and I made sure to tell her that I was proud of her for suing those 5 banks for their illegal foreclosure practices. My friend Bob took a picture of us:

All in all, it was a great party. Enjoy the holidays!!

Upcoming holiday parties

Lt. Governor Tim Murray is holding his annual holiday party:

Wednesday, December 7

Tim Murray’s Annual Worcester Holiday Celebration

6 – 8 p.m.

Mechanics Hall
321 Main Street Worcester

And Kate Donaghue will be holding her annual holiday bash in Westborough. Officially sponsored by the Westborough DTC, it is known informally as Kate’s Party in and will be held in Westborough on December 11 from 2 to 6 PM. Everyone is invited. It does get a little chaotic at times. It is not an event for the claustrophobic guest.

RSVPs from elected officials are still coming in. At this point expected guests include Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, Congressman Jim McGovern, State Treasurer Steve Grossman, State Senators Jamie Eldridge, Ben Downing and Sal DiDomenico; State Reps Carolyn Dykema, VIncent Pedone and John Mahoney. It looks like a strong showing from Worcester County officials with DA Joe Early. Clerk of Courts Dennis McManus, Register of Probate Steve Abraham and Register of Deeds Tony Vigliotti. State Party Chair John Walsh will be in attendance. U. S. Senate candidates Elizabeth Warren, Tom Conroy, Marisa DeFranco and James Coyne King have all confirmed that they will be in attendance. Please do keep in mind that it is a holiday open house. There is no speaking program. With Congressional redistricting this is a great chance for those of you who are new to his district to come by and say hello. With redistricting and Congressman Frank stepping down this is an opportunity for people in the district to gather. I’m expecting a strong contingent from towns that are new to the Fourth CD. Westborough is now the “East Coast” of the Second CD.

RSVP on facebook or send an e-mail to KateDonaghue AT aol DOT com.
